Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Thanks for uploading File:Pizza peel, 930544 004.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{self|cc-zero}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File copyright status
[edit] Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you.

Permission from the museum
[edit]Hi, For files like File:Toy pull, 589009.jpg and File:Box, toy, 589008.jpg, we need some evidence that the museum owns the copyright, and is therefore entitled to license these files. Copyright is by default to the author, not to the people or institution who owns the items. And it can only be transferred in writing. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 10:07, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Under New Zealand's Copyright Act 1994, the copyright for industrially applied works of artistic craftsmanship, like mass-produced items, lasts for 16 years from the time the work is industrially applied. According to the NZ Copyright Act 1994 the Museum is allowed to release photographs of these items under CCBY license.
- Our copyright policy adheres strictly to this legislation, for more information about our licensing process please read here: https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/getmedia/fff4445f-3320-4cea-ac9c-59cd73cd5eba/auckland-museum-copyright-licensing-guide.
- Please feel free to see the copyright release attached to the images on each catalogue item on our Collections Online portal.

- I am waiting for the formal release from the owner of this work via email - I have been in touch with the copyright permissions team already. It was released to me from the owner, but they just need written confirmation from the owner via email within a month of being posted - that month hasn't passed yet, but I will give the owner of the image a bump.
